2021-22 Learning Model
Dear Parents & Guardians of Willis ISD,
It is hard to believe we are nearing the end of another school year. The pandemic certainly has brought many challenges to public schools. We are grateful to our dedicated teachers and staff for making each day possible. We are also grateful for hard-working students and caring parents. Without your partnership this year, this simply would not have been possible.
While many of our challenges have been daily (masks, social distancing), some challenges are bigger, spreading across time. The challenge I’m referring to is the significant learning loss that has occurred in many of our students.
We are committed to providing a safe and high-quality education for all students. The safety standards put in place this year have allowed us to provide in-person learning all year. However, local and state data show us that remote learning does not provide the same results as quality in-person learning. Remote learning was always considered a crisis response and never a permanent educational solution.
Therefore, Willis ISD - will open the 2021-2022 school year with in-person education as the sole option for all students.
Beginning May 24, masks will be optional for staff and students during summer activities. It is our intention that masks will be optional in the 2021-2022 school year. However, one big truth we have learned during the past year is that nothing is certain day to day. Therefore, we will monitor the situation in the summer and in consultation with health officials, make a final determination later this summer regarding masks at school.
Willis ISD will continue to work closely with the MCHD to monitor community spread and to ensure that staff and student safety remain our top priority.
Sincerely,
Tim Harkrider, Ed.D.
