Degrees and Certifications:
My name is Mr. Mario Herrera. I was born in Anaheim, California, but both of my parents were born in Mexico. They moved to the States while my mother was pregnant with my older sister. My parents wanted to give their children a better life and I think they did a pretty good job. At first school was not easy for me. I was a pretty tough student to teach. I had a lot of problems with concentration and the language barrier added to those problems. My first language was Spanish. We moved around quite a bit when I was growing up and at each school I was placed in a different ESL program. My older sister was a tremendous help during this time period. She was my first positive experience with an educator. Now she wasn’t a teacher, she was just a kid like me except she was one year ahead. She was able to simplify lessons for me and she understood the problems that I was facing. Eventually, I became fluent in English and I started to excel academically. I graduated in the top 10% of my high school class then I did two years at Lone Star Community College because I wanted to save some money. From Lone Star, I transferred to The University of Texas at Austin and graduated in December of 2018 with honors receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English and Rhetoric.
This will be my first year teaching and I will be teaching English 2 as well as ESL Read 2. If you need to contact me, my email is firstname.lastname@example.org. I make sure to always have my phone on me and it is connected to my email. Thank you for letting me ramble. I am very excited for this school year and I can’t wait to get to know all of you. But before I go, I wanted to leave you with this moving piece from TS Eliot’s Four Quartets.
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time
Thank you and have a super Wildkat day.
