Wildkat UIL Invitational a Success

Conroe High School won the Sweepstakes trophy at the end of the day. Magnolia High School placed second and the Wildkats finished third in the competition.

The annual event raises scholarship money for Wildkat UIL participants. The invitational is staffed by volunteers from the school and around the community.

“The amount of support the UIL team receives from our community, former UIL students and the WHS administration is amazing,” UIL coordinator Emily Meachen said. “This tournament takes a lot of work, and I am so grateful to have such an awesome team to help make it successful.”

The Wildkat journalism team finished at the top for the day. The team includes writers in four events: news writing, feature writing, headline writing and editorial writing. There was also a Copy Editing competition that is still under review by UIL, so it did not count for points for the team.

“It was a really great way to start off UIL this year,” junior Shelby McVey said. “My goal by the end of the season is to be part of the UIL All- State Journalism team. I get points each time I place, so I want to compete as much as possible.”

UIL coaches for the season are Chris Slovak, DeAnna Slovak, Gary Granger, Lori Mitchell, Mike Robinson, Whitney Taylor and Emily Meachen.
