Willis ISD Hosts Area UIL Academic Tournament

“The day is almost like a reunion,” UIL coordinator Emily Meachen said. “I love seeing my former students come back to Willis High School to judge and volunteer for the event.”

Ten schools competed in events including speech, math, science, spelling, social studies, journalism and computer science.

The Willis team finished third overall behind Magnolia and New Waverly.

“I was very proud of our team’s finish,” Meachen said. “We did not spend as much time practicing as we would have liked. We now know what we need to work on before the district tournament in March.”

The journalism team earned a first place finish in feature writing, headline writing and the pilot test of copy editing.

“I hope that our district offers copy editing,” senior Justin Strother said. “That is my best chance to place at district.”
