WISD’s MVP for October 2015 Relates Math to Real Life

For taking her lunch time to tutor students who may need extra assistance and finding the perfect way to reach the reluctant learner, Terry was named Willis ISD’s Most Valuable Player for October 2015.

“What I love most about Whitney is that she walks in our building each day with a smile on her face, full of passion, energy, love and excitement for her students and our school,” stated Cannan Elementary Principal Kim Sprayberry.

That enthusiasm has led Terry to embrace the balanced math model that Willis ISD has put into place this year.

“She is doing an excellent job with our daily math review and implementing our fact fluency program,” declared Cannan’s Math Coach, Beverly Cruz.

The Sam Houston State graduate in her sixth year of teaching strives to help her students see the relevance of her lessons in other aspects of life to engage them in the learning process. At the same time, she keeps a watchful eye for those who need extra attention.

Whitney’s devotion to helping each child succeed stems from her own early struggles in school.

“I would try really hard but would go home and cry and be frustrated,” explains Terry. “Along the way I was fortunate to have teachers who took the time to teach me at my pace and to help me when I didn’t understand.”

She noticed a student who seemed to dread math everyday was determined to ensure the child always left a little bit happier than when the lesson began. That determination paid off.

“That student’s parent came to me at Open House and told me that homework is no longer a struggle and there are no more tears at night,” Terry related. “She said, ‘I don’t know what you are doing, but thank you so much!’ That meant the world to me.”

Terry means the world to her students who exclaim, “Math is fun in Ms. Terry’s class.”

One student declared, “I love Ms. Terry. She’s our other mother.”

“Whitney’s ability to build relationships and motivate her students is why she and her students are extremely successful,” stated WISD Superintendent Tim Harkrider. “I’m glad Whitney’s a part of the Willis ISD team.”
