Board of Trustees
Serving Willis ISD students, families and staff
The Willis ISD Board of Trustees is made up of seven elected members serving four-year terms. Elections are held in November in even-numbered years and terms are staggered.
School boards set local policy, approve purchases over $50,000, and appoint the Superintendent. The school board serves the wishes of the local community and is responsible for overseeing the Superintendent's management of district operations and student success.

School Board Governance
The Willis Independent School District Board of Trustees meets monthly on the second Wednesday of each month, unless otherwise noted, at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the Sharon Hill Jennette Administration Building located at 612 N Campbell Street in Willis. No person or group of people may act in the name of the Board of Trustees, and the authority of an individual trustees exists ONLY during a legally-called meeting. It takes four school board members to constitute a quorum. An item of business must come before the Board in the form of a motion in order for it to pass - regardless of the number of board members present.
School Board members receive no salary or other compensation for their services to the community. The Board has control over local school matters, subject only to limitations imposed by state law, regulations of the State Commissioner of Education, and the will of local residents as expressed in school district elections. There are several key roles and responsibilities vested in the Board of Trustees. Some of those roles and responsibilities include:
- Exercise educational leadership and draft policies for the operation of local schools.
- Hire and evaluate the superintendent and delegate all administrative responsibilities.
- Authorize the appointment of teachers and other district staff members.
- Determine educational standards and goals. Evaluate outcomes.
- Approve curriculum.
- Secure money for school operational needs and building programs and authorize expenditures.
- Approve the school district budget.
- Express and represent the views of the community in matters affecting education.
- Interpret the educational programs and needs of the community in order to discharge their responsibility as a school board member.
- Call on the consultative resources available in the community and the professional district staff.
- Communicate with the community.

The Superintendent of Schools is appointed by the Board of Trustees and acts as its Executive Officer in administering its policies in the operation of Willis ISD schools.
Citizens may sign up to address the Board during the Open Forum section of the regular monthly Board workshop.
The School Board must hold open meetings in order to comply with the Open Meetings Act.
There are, by law, provisions for the Board of Trustees to meet in executive session after a meeting is properly called and posted.
School Board elections are held semi-annually on even numbered years in November. Trustees serve staggered, four-year terms so that the entire School Board is never up for election at the same time.

School Board trustees are required by law to participate in training activities accredited by the Texas Education Agency.
There are several provisions in school board policy that allows citizens to address the Board.

The following candidates are unopposed therefore the election has been canceled and the following candidates are re-elected:

REQUIRED POSTINGS:
Candidate Eligibility
An individual is eligible to be a candidate for, or elected or appointed to, a Texas school board if the individual completes an Application for a Place on the Ballot by the deadline date and if the individual:
- Is a United States citizen;
- Is 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election or on the date of appointment, as applicable;
- Has not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote;
- Has not been finally convicted of a felony;
- Has resided continuously in the state for 12 months and in the territory from which the office is elected for six months immediately preceding the following date:
- For an independent candidate, the date of the regular filing deadline for a candidate’s application for a place on the ballot;
- For a write-in candidate, the date of the election at which the candidate’s name is written in; or
- For an appointee to an office, the date the appointment is made;
- Is registered to vote in the territory from which the office is elected on the date described above;
- Must be a qualified voter: 18 years of age or older, a U.S. citizen, a Texas resident, a registered voter, not determined to be totally or partially mentally incapacitated by an appropriate court, and not finally convicted of a felony;
- Has not been convicted of a felony or an offense under Texas Penal Code §43.02(b) regarding prostitution.

Election Date & Trustee Term Dates
On January 19, 2007, the Board of Trustees passed a Resolution to change the trustee election date from the May uniform election date to the November uniform election date. The Trustee elections will be held jointly with Montgomery and San Jacinto Counties in even-numbered years. Trustees serve four-year terms.
