  A Fun Science Insect Collection

I am giving a Science test grade for an Insect collection with at least 10 different  labeled insects.  (EX: honey bee, lady bug, Luna Moth, Tiger Beatle, fire ant, honey ant, etc.)

Examples of how Insects can be displayed: shoebox, picture frame, Styrofoam…

This Fun Project will be due Friday, April 16th.

What does an insect have? 6 legs, and 3 body parts (a head, thorax and abdomen)

Can we collect butterflies?  No!

Can we collect moths? Yes!

What might you need to have before you start searching?

1.       Clear plastic cups

2.       cotton ball, Kleenex or toilet paper

3.        Rubbing alcohol to saturate your cotton ball, etc.

4.       Approximately 20 pins to stick into insects after dead

5.       Piece of cardboard or Styrofoam to stick bugs on with a pin.

6.       Piece of paper for a temporary lid

7.       Something heaver (paperback book) to put over the paper, on top of your cup, to keep the insect inside, until alcohol works.

How can we collect insect?

You can use the clear plastic cup to catch one and the large piece of paper (to use as a temporary lid as you slide it under the cup) after you have caught your insect.

Have a cotton ball (or toilet paper) saturated with rubbing alcohol to quickly drop inside cup.

Wait until your insect is dead for over 10 minutes before you pick it up.

Then attach your dead insect to a piece of cardboard, with a pin, and continue looking for another insect...
